Baby Name Learning Center -Tips for naming your baby!

Go Baby Name will be adding weekly articles with tips and tricks to help you name your baby!

Who doesn’t enjoy looking through Lists of baby names; whether you're searching for a name for your baby-to-be, wondering about the popularity of your own name, or just curious about what baby names are popular in today’s culture.

When naming a baby, there are many things to consider besides “how popular” or “is this name unique”. Here are some helpful tips that you can use to make the process fun:

  1. Baby names need to complement the sound of your last name. Some parents prefer to also match the sound of the middle name but in most cases this is not needed.
  2. As you narrow down the list of names, look at the associated initials to be sure that you don't give the new baby initials that don’t go well together.
  3. You may not want a baby name so unusual that the other kids will make fun of your child as he or she grows up.
  4. Trendy baby names sound great today, but by the time the baby is ten years old it may be perceived differently.
  5. Consider how you spell the name. There are many ways to spell a name and even a slight variation could give the unique quality you are looking for. For example: Mathew and Matthew. Both are easy to remember but unique in their spelling.
  6. Naming your child in honor of relatives or ancestors is a great idea. If you want to add that special family connection, but still use a more popular name, consider the middle name for this purpose.
  7. What does the name “mean”? Many names have derived meanings that can be an interesting twist.
  8. Avoid baby names that might produce insulting nicknames later on in life. Try to think back to when you were in grade school… Children can come up with some really off-the-wall nicknames even for the most innocent name.
  9. If you have other children, be sure to compare the new baby name with your other children. If every name begins with the letter “a” then be prepared to mix up the names when you start calling out for them. It is very common for friends and family to mix up names if they are too similar.
  10. Have FUN! Naming your child should be a fun and positive experience. If you find you’re not having fun, take a step back and think of another way to go about it. Bringing a new child into the world is a fun and joyous experience and picking out the name should reflect this.

There are literally thousands of names waiting for you out there, so good luck on your search for the perfect baby name!
